A crane safe load indicator (SLI) is a device fitted to a crane that alerts the operator when a lift is within, approaching, or exceeding the machine’s rated safe working load. SLIs have been used on cranes for more than 50 years, and the underlying technology has advanced considerably — modern systems combine load sensing with radius and boom-angle monitoring to give a real-time picture of the lift.
Why an SLI matters
Overloading is one of the leading causes of crane tip-overs and structural failure. An SLI gives the operator continuous, accurate feedback so a lift can be stopped or adjusted before it exceeds the crane’s rated capacity — rather than relying on manual load charts and operator judgement alone.
What to look for
- Fit for the crane type. Mobile, crawler, tower, boom truck, ship-mounted, and industrial gantry cranes each need a correctly specified system.
- Accuracy and response time. The display should update in real time as radius and boom angle change during the lift.
- Ease of installation and calibration. Systems that require extensive downtime to fit or calibrate add cost beyond the unit price.
- Warranty and local support. A system is only as useful as the support behind it if it needs recalibration or repair.
